Course Description

The central purpose of this course is for students to gain experience and confidence in a process of research, divergent thinking and the iterative generation of many ideas followed by development of decision making criteria and a process of convergence to arrive at a final design proposal.

This is achieved through practice of the methods for object ( product ) design and development in two separate 7 week projects . A primary goal of the course is for the students to achieve an ability to repeat this activity on demand in successive terms.

• Project framing
• Product design project research
• Divergent thinking and methods for idea generation
• Convergent thinking and methods to make decisions against value criteria
• Meaning and message expressed through design form
• Communications for design development and presentations

Students engage in an iterative design approach that defines criteria for decision-making and then utilizes that criteria to work toward a final concept proposal. Idea sketch techniques and sketch modeling methods are taught to facilitate exploration. This class intends to build strong abilities for this phase of the design process so that in later terms it will integrate and build with other components of a larger design process. Students explore conveying meaning in their formal designs and build their sensitivity to and vocabulary for developing the qualitative aspects of their 3D design proposals.

Class time will be divided between the critique and discussion of student work from the previous week’s assignments, lectures and demonstrations for the next assignment, and in class project work.
